How will you use your phone?
- International roaming or a foreign SIM: keep your own number and plan.
- Indonesian tourist SIM or eSIM: local data and a local number.
IMEI
- No customs IMEI registration is needed if you keep foreign roaming.
- Tourists using an Indonesian SIM can register the handset at a mobile-operator outlet for network access for up to 90 days.

Where to buy and register
Use an operator store or an airport counter — they can complete passport registration. Convenience stores usually cannot.
- Telkomsel GraPARI: best island-wide coverage, registration in store.
- XL Center: cheaper data, strong in the south.
- Indosat Ooredoo store: competitive tourist packages.
Don't buy a SIM from a tout in the terminal — only at an official, authorised counter.
