🏧 Money & ATMs in Bali
Withdraw in IDR, decline ATM conversion, use bank ATMs and licensed changers — how to keep your money in Bali.
Withdraw in IDR, not your home currency
An ATM offering a "guaranteed rate" is dynamic currency conversion. The machine sets its own rate, usually worse than your bank's, and the markup sits inside the rate, so no separate fee shows on screen. Decline it and choose IDR every time.
Use bank ATMs
- Reliable with foreign cards: BCA, Mandiri, BNI, CIMB Niaga.
- Prefer machines at a branch (during banking hours) or inside a mall over standalone street units from unknown operators.
- Typical fee: IDR 25,000–50,000 per withdrawal, and your own bank may add its charge. Each transaction is capped, so make fewer, larger withdrawals.
- ATM kept your card: an open branch can usually help on the spot. Away from a staffed branch, call your bank or freeze the card in its app immediately. Refuse help from strangers.
Money changers: the test that works anywhere
- Look for the Bank Indonesia "PVA Berizin" licence board. No board — walk away.
- Rates are posted on a board, not quoted verbally.
- "No commission" plus a rate far better than everyone else's is a trick.
- Ask for a printed receipt.
- Count the cash yourself at the counter and don't hand it back once counted.
Licensed chains
- BMC (PT Bali Maspintjinra), since 1993: Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Kerobokan, Canggu, Sanur, Ubud.
- Central Kuta Money Exchange, since 1985: Kuta, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Denpasar, Sanur, Ubud.
- Bali Best Rate (PT Dirgahayu Valuta Prima), since 1984: Kuta, Sanur, Ubud, near Tanah Lot.
Also worth knowing
- Don't change money at the airport: rates are materially worse than in town. Change a little for the taxi and a drink, the rest next day at a licensed office.
- US notes older than about 20 years may be refused or taken at a worse rate. Bring clean, recent, unmarked notes.
- Grab and Gojek are effectively cash: foreign cards often fail in-app. Carry small notes — drivers may refuse to break 100k for a 22k fare.
- If a rate, fare or fee waiver looks far better than everywhere else, check twice.
