💧 Water, food, sun & mosquitoes in Bali
Tap water, sun and heat, dengue mosquitoes and stomach upsets — the everyday basics for Bali.
Water & food
- Don't drink tap water: use sealed bottled water or a trusted refill station.
- Brushing teeth with tap water is a personal-risk choice; bottled is safer.
- Ice and raw items at very informal warungs vary in quality. Use judgement rather than alarm.
- Choose busy places that cook fresh to order.
- Wash hands or carry sanitiser.
Sun & heat
- Drink far more water than at home: heat and humidity dehydrate you faster than you expect. Watch for dehydration and use electrolytes if needed.
- The sun is strongest around midday — plan shade or indoor time then.
- Use reef-safe SPF and reapply after swimming.
- Sunburn is the most common first-day mistake.
Mosquitoes
- Dengue exists in Bali.
- Use repellent day and evening: dengue mosquitoes bite in daytime too.
- Cover up at dawn and dusk.
- Use screens, air conditioning or nets, and remove standing water near your room.
- High fever, severe headache, persistent vomiting or worsening symptoms — see a doctor. Don't self-diagnose.
Stomach upset basics
- Hydration and rest first.
- Oral rehydration salts from a pharmacy.
- See a doctor for blood, high fever, or symptoms lasting more than a couple of days.
