🤫 Nyepi & ceremonies in Bali
Nyepi, the Day of Silence: airport and roads, how to prepare, plus processions and ceremonies on other days.
Nyepi is the Balinese Day of Silence, a public holiday with exceptional island-wide restrictions. The date changes every year. If your trip overlaps it, plan around it in advance.
What it means in practice
The whole island observes silence for one full day. Visitors stay in their accommodation, streets are quiet and normal activity pauses. Hotels usually keep guests fed but ask them to stay on the property.
Airport and roads
Airport operations and road travel are exceptionally restricted around Nyepi. Do not plan to arrive, depart or transfer on that day. Check your dates against current official guidance before booking.
Prepare the day before
- Buy water, snacks, medication and anything else you need.
- Charge your devices.
- Download offline maps.
Lights and noise
Expect low lighting and quiet after dark. Follow what your accommodation and the local community ask. Local security (pecalang) manage the streets on the day.
The night before
Large ogoh-ogoh parades usually take place. Worth seeing, but roads get very busy — leave extra time and stay with the crowd flow.
Ceremonies on any other day
- Temple ceremonies and processions happen year-round and can block or slow a road with no notice. Be patient, don't push through, follow local marshals.
- In ceremony season leave a generous buffer for flights, boats and bookings: drivers cannot go around a procession.
- Stand back, don't walk through or in front of a procession, keep noise down and ask before photographing participants.
