🚤 Boats & island trips: safety checklist

Before a fast boat to Nusa Penida, Lembongan or the Gilis: operator, lifejackets, sea conditions and cancellations.

A checklist before a fast-boat trip to Nusa Penida, Lembongan, the Gilis and beyond.

  • Choose a reputable operator with visible safety equipment and a passenger manifest.
  • Confirm lifejackets are available for everyone, including children, and know where they are stored.
  • Check weather and sea conditions on the day. Crossings can be rough, especially in the afternoon and in rainy season.
  • If the operator or authorities cancel or delay for safety, don't push to travel and don't switch to an unlicensed boat.
  • Keep passport, phone and cash in a sealed dry bag, with digital copies on your phone.
  • Board sensibly, hold on when moving and sit where the crew tell you.
  • Leave a big buffer between an island trip and a flight: cancellations are common.

We don't rate individual boat operators.
