🐕 Dog or monkey bite: what to do now
Wash for 15 minutes, disinfect and get urgent care: rabies treatment in Bali is time-critical.
Bitten or scratched by a dog or monkey? Do these steps now, in this order.
1. Wash the wound now
Soap and running water for a full 15 minutes. This matters more than anything else: it physically removes virus from the wound. Most people stop too early.
2. Disinfect
Antiseptic, iodine or alcohol if available. Don't close or bandage the wound tightly.
3. Call before you travel to a hospital
Ask whether they have rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin in stock right now. Arriving where they hold only vaccine can cost hours you may need.
4. Don't wait for symptoms
Treatment no longer works once symptoms appear. Go today, even for a small scratch or a lick on broken skin.
What to ask for
- Rabies vaccine: a course of doses, widely stocked at private hospitals and larger clinics.
- Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG): given once, around the wound, for higher-risk exposures. Scarcer, much more expensive, not stocked everywhere — this is the one to phone about.
- Say: "Possible rabies exposure — a bite/scratch today. Do you have rabies vaccine and RIG in stock now? Can you treat me tonight, and what payment do you need up front?"

What it costs
A full private vaccine course runs from the high hundreds into the low thousands of US dollars; RIG adds to that. Private hospitals require payment or a guarantee up front. Save your policy number and 24-hour assistance line offline.
Your dose dates
The clinic sets your schedule — put the dates in your phone calendar and follow its written plan. If you leave Indonesia before the course ends, take your vaccination record and finish the doses at home. Don't stop.
