🌊 Beach safety: rip currents
On Bali's west coast the real danger is rip currents, not sharks. Where they are strongest and what to do if caught.
Rip currents, not sharks, are the real danger on the west coast.
Where rips are strongest
On the west-coast surf beaches, at any tide: Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Echo Beach.
The rules
- Swim between the red-and-yellow flags — the patrolled zone. Lifeguards watch only that zone.
- Red flags mean the water is closed, however calm it looks from the sand.
- Caught in a rip? Don't swim against it. A rip pulls you out, not under. Swim parallel to the beach until free, then come in at an angle. Raise an arm if you need help.
- Reef and urchin injuries need proper cleaning: coral cuts infect quickly in the tropics. See a clinic if they redden.
